All of us who drive cars are well aware of the aggravation caused by road construction on the way to where we need to be. As much as we might want to speed up to get past it, it is important to obey the safety signs posted to keep traffic flowing and everyone healthy.
The first sign one encounters is usually Construction Ahead and the distance to it. This is normally followed by a Reduce Speed sign with the lower compulsory speed. As we approach the construction there will be Men at Work safety signs warning of the possibility of people walking on or near the road. These will be often followed by signs depicting the dangers of machinery on the road or rocks being tossed up by that equipment.
Construction signs are easy to see, since their configurations are standard in most countries. These safety signs will all have black letters and pictograms on an orange background, a colour combination only used in signs erected for short-term conditions. The bold colour helps differentiate them from regular traffic signs, but primarily it is to alert drivers to the possible perils in the locale. Most of these safety signs are diamond shaped, although some can be rectangular, but all are easy to understand. The key is to pay attention to what they say before entering the construction zone, so that you will be ready for the situation ahead, which is why they are placed well in advance of the actual work area.
